Cool – Kelli Anderson presents the ‘book camera’

A couple of days ago, artist and designer Kelli Anderson published a new book titled This Book is a Camera. As the title suggests it’s a pop-up book containing a fully functional pinhole camera made of paper which pops up once you open the book.

The book mainly addresses young ambitious photographers who gained their first experience in photography with a smartphone, as well as older beginners. The book camera serves to illustrate the basics and history of photography to both groups. The delivery package also includes black-and-white photographic paper by Ilford, which, as it’s common with pinhole cameras, serves as the recording medium. The simple camera including 5 photographic papers by Ilford costs 29 dollars. I’ve attached a sample image below.

On her blog (scroll down to “Make it yourself”) Anderson provides the template for her pinhole camera as a download under the “Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 Generic“ license. This means that do-it-yourself guys can download the template for free and are allowed to create their own “book camera”. 🙂 In the following video you can learn how to take pictures with such an unusual camera and how to develop and digitalize the images.
