Easter, according to a recent newspaper report, is supposed to be the best season to visit Venice and its little nearby islands. “Venice… First time here?” somebody asked me. No. For another time. But this time only beautiful Venezia wasn’t enough – after the gray winter I was longing for as many colors as possible. That’s why I took the ferryboat to Burano. This island can already be seen from far away. The leaning clock tower and the colorful houses of the tiny village on the island spread their colors into the distance.
Some days ago SIGMA announced four new lenses on their website and on different company-owned social media pages. So before taking a closer look at these newcomers made of glass, I recently became interested in reviewing the classic that by now can’t be neglected anymore, the SIGMA Art 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens, in terms of autofocus and vignetting and with studio photography.
Today’s photo walk also takes us to the red city or the Pearl of the South – better known as Marrakech. I don’t get tired of repeating how spellbound I was by this city. I don’t know if you know this feeling but some places simply are different. They have their charm and without realizing you get spellbound.
So far not many cities have delighted me as much as that one. Besides Istanbul and Hanoi, Marrakech definitely belongs to my favorite photo cities.
After my last photo walks and reviews led me through the streets of Marrakech, this week it was time again to take a tour through the local forests. Winter is about to fade away and the sun comes back for a few hours as the sunbeams warm our skin again. The last snow is about to melt and every now and then you can see little green leaves and grasses sprout.
After an exhausting month of exams at university the desire for some fresh air was rarely as big as yesterday evening. So despite the freezing cold and the dark I decided to drive to the river at the outskirts of the city with my camera equipment. This time I took the SIGMA Art 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM and my Canon EOS 600D with me.
For some weeks I’ve been searching for winter desperately, for some snow on the trees, for some icicles hanging down the rooftops, for children walking through the winter landscape wearing snowshoes or trailing their toboggans. All I’ve found so far was sad sceneries, barren meadows and anything else but a winter fairytale atmosphere.
As I fell into my bed exhausted yesterday evening and dared to glimpse out of the window before closing my eyes, the image was totally different from this morning. During the night snow finally surprised us for the first time this winter. I was happy like a little child the way I always get happy when everything is white.
In the city this winter is gray. Everything’s gray, the tall buildings, the sky and even sometimes the people appear somewhat gray to me because of the murky atmosphere. The snow never remains and that’s why there’s never a real winter feeling, except for our cold fingers and a red nose.
That’s also the reason why I grabbed my camera (a Canon EOS 5D Mark III) and my new SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM lens to go out of town. However, unfortunately I still wasn’t able to find a real winter. 😉
One Model – one Location – one Lens. To have the right equipment for my upcoming photoshoot, I look through my objectives for a suitable portrait lens.
Back then, as a beginner in the photography, I bought the light strong Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens. Now, I unpacked it again and to have a closer look. In comparison with my Canon 50mm F1.4 is the fixed-focal-length from Sigma with 800g significantly heavier and therefore handier, what I really like.
As you could already see on this blog, the SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens has been part of the equipment I take with me for quite some time now. I’ve tested its heart and its soul by studying diverse reports, professional reviews etc. and, of course, by taking photos myself under different conditions.
In order to finalize all the information on this particular lens I took pictures under very special light conditions for you – in artificial light in the dark.
Regarding the specs I need to say that I took all the pictures with an APS-C camera, the Canon EOS 600D. This means that I had to keep the ISO value as low as possible in order to take high quality pictures – so it was a real challenge for the optics of the lens.
