At the time of 16mm f/1.4’s announcement I didn’t notice, that Sigma had released a new roadmap. I wasn’t the only one, because as far as I’m aware of, none of the rumor websites had reported about the lens depicted on the roadmap. It was only after I had stumbled upon several threads in different forums that I realized, that Sigma is developing a new 50mm lens.
Not much is known about the mystery lens, not even its focal length or aperture size. The only thing certain is that it will be a bit shorter than the 60mm f/2.8. Whether it will be designed for APS-C sensors like all existing Sigma lenses for mirrorless cameras or full frame, is anyone’s guess at this point. If I’m not mistaken, there was speculation regarding if or when Sigma is going to release lenses for Sony’s A7 line of cameras.
I‘m guessing that it won’t turn out to be a f/2.8 lens, because after the 30mm f/1.4 and 16mm f/1.4 it makes sense to release a telephoto lens with f/1.4, in order to have a complete “holy trinity” consisting of primes on the market. Regarding focal length, I’m assuming that it will be either 55mm or 56mm, because this is the way to go, if you want to offer a 85mm full frame equivalent lens for Sony E cameras with APS-C sensors, even though the equivalent focal length on mFT (110mm or 112mm) would be rather unusual.
What do you make of it? Is it going to be a 55/1.4 or do you think that a different focal length / aperture combo is more likely?
