Product photography – what’s better?


Today we’ll compare two different SIGMA top lenses and three different focal lengths. We shall examine diverse aspects regarding technology and aesthetic features while focusing on product photography.

Lens 1: SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM; Focal length: 35mm

Lens 2: SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM; Focal length: 24mm und 70mm

Comparing the two lenses is pretty much unfair. The SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 is a fixed focal length from the Art series, a celebrated lens that creates extremely brilliant photos and achieves top scores in many reviews. The other lens is a functional, compact and popular all-round lens – the SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 with an open aperture of 2.8, less light-intense but an extremely practical zoom lens, for instance used for traveling.

However, it’s because of their differences that a little comparison is even more interesting as you can quickly figure out some details that are obviously different.

At home I created my own little mini studio and took pictures with the same speed (1/100), an ISO value of 800, an aperture of f/5 and 55000 Kelvin white-balance. The focal lengths I tested were 35mm, 24mm and 70mm.

The photos shown here are very finely tuned, but otherwise not edited any further so you can very well see the differences between the lenses without getting a distorted result.

When you look at the photos you will immediately notice that the photos taken with the SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 look more saturated, clearer and sharper than those taken with the SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8. Of course that’s due to the high-quality system of the lens, which is a level above the zoom lens. But even the latter creates sharp and nice photos. In still-life or product photography one advantage is that you can vary the focal lengths. This, of course, is a big plus for the compact zoom lens. That’s why you can choose your own narrow or broader focus to capture details of a subject without losing the exact perspective of the camera on the tripod.

If you now include aesthetic aspects when comparing the focal lengths, each model has its advantages. While a 24mm focal length provides a large area and the actual subject merges very nicely with the blue or marble surface, the big focal length conceals a large part of the background. From this distance the 35mm lens creates a blue frame around the respective subject of presentation, which seems clear and beautiful.

Which option is the better one totally depends on the photographer’s or the observer’s opinion. Even a variation of different configurations of fixed focal lengths can look very nice and interesting.
