Comparing the Sigma Photo Pro 6.3 vs. 6.3.2


I read in the dpreview forum that even pictures which were taken with older firmware-versions, will benefit from the more accurate automatic white balance and the more realistic colour rendering of Sigma Photo Pro 6.3.2. To see for myself, I developed six pictures that I took with my DP2 Quattro with SPP 6.3 and 6.3.2.

To guarantee a fair comparison, I used the same adjustments for both versions of the raw-converter: all settings in the tonal correction module were set on 0, except of sharpness, which was reduced to -0,8. Image noise reduction, both, Luma and Chroma, were deactivated and the white-balance was set to “auto” and the color mode “portrait”.

Then I imported the 12 pictures, which got exported as 16-bit-TIFFs, in Lightroom. This is where I created the following screenshot. You can find the full resolution JPEGs in the respective Flickr set.

The first thing I noticed was, that the color setting “portrait” in SPP 6.3.2 has a lower contrast level. The shadows are obviously brighter than in the pictures I developed with SPP 6.3. There is no hint for that on the Sigma Global website, instead they claim that it has improved the color reproduction. The color blue won’t have a cyan shade and the color green won’t have a yellow shade anymore. I can definitely verify the part with the cyan shade, it disappeared. The sky in the first and the third picture is certainly more authentic. The color green (as you can see in the second and fifth picture), seems to be reproduced in the exact same manner as it was in the SPP 6.3. Maybe the improvement lies in the new firmware-version for the quattros and not in the SPP. There is also a slight evidence that the shadows show less luminance noise and the noise, even seems to be reduced when you adjust the contrast level to match 6.3. To do this, you simply have to move the contrast control up to +30. Concerning the rest, I can’t say for sure if there was any improvement, because of the reduced contrast, I already mentioned.
