Flatland: warped cityscapes by Aydın Büyüktaş

Do you remember the stunning special effects in the movie “Inception”, particularly the one street scene in Paris, where the Earth gets warped upwards by 180 degrees? The Turkish photographer Aydın Büyüktaş warps in a similar manner various sights and areas in Istanbul – for example the New Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and the central bus station.

Despite the similarity, the inspiration for the effect was supposedly not Christopher Nolan’s Blockbuster from 2010, but rather the 1884 novella “Flatland”. Büyüktaş’ identically titled series is supposed to challenge viewers’ perception the same way Edwin Abbot did with his satirical Novell at the end of the 19th century.

Each of the photos is composed of multiple images, which were captured with the aid of a drone und similar to panoramas stitched together on a computer.
