Fitness studio? No need, the Sigma 150-600mm C is here ;)

For a few days now I’ve been the owner of a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary Tele Zoom. The timing for this purchase isn’t quite ideal, as taking photos with such lenses requires a lot of light. Actually I didn’t want to buy it before spring, but then I had a G.A.S. attack. A bad one too. 😉

So far I’ve only taken the lens twice on a photo walk. That’s why I don’t have a lot to tell. Except maybe that it’s not that easy finding motifs at 600mm (900mm FF equivalent) when you look through the viewfinder. Therefore, I usually also have my left eye open because by doing so you can aim on little birds far away significantly faster with the camera.

My second insight is: Birds may look sweet, but appearances are deceiving. In reality they’re evil little goblins who love driving photographers mad. If you hold your camera so that the lens looks downwards, you can get closer to them up to five meters. But as soon as you point the camera at them, they will fly away. Then you have to get closer again step by step and, when the moment is right, try to shoot the picture again. After a while you’ll feel like the donkey running after a carrot hanging right in front of its nose. 🙂

  1. Nice photos Lars. Great job holding the lens steady. How did you manage that?

    1. Thank you Dan. The OS is very good and helps a lot in reducing camera movement. But so does the weight of the lens. Camera shake is less of a problem when handling heavy gear. And this combo weighs a lot. 2,7kg to be exact.
