After the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 has been mentioned on various buzz-pages for the first time at the beginning of September, there are now very first pictures of the lens to be seen on Sigma-Rumors.com. According to an anonymous source at Sigma-rumors, the zoom will weigh up to 885 g and consists of 19 lenses in 15 groups. As can be seen without difficulty, the new 24-105mm is a heavy lens with a highly complicated optical design. For comparison, the 24-105mm f/4 Canon has 18 elements in 13 groups and “only” weighs 670 g. That bodes well for good image quality. 🙂
Unlike initially expected, the Sigma will be part of the “Art” product line instead of the “Contemporary”. “Zoom” and “Art”? This instantly makes me think of the 18-35mm f/1.8, which set a new standard when it comes to light gathering power and image quality. As of now, there is no info yet on the image quality of the Sigma 24-105mm. With a little bit of luck, we’ll know more in less than 10 days, because that’s when the PhotoPlus Expo opens its doors. 😉
Update: Sigma have officially announced the 24-105mm f/4 on the Sigma Global Vision web site. No info on price and availability as of yet.
