Winners of the 2013 Word Press Photo Contest announced!

As every year also this time the best journalist photos have been selected for the Word Press Photo Award. Total of 103,481 pictures submitted by 5666 photographers were presented during the WPP 2013. Out of this overwhelming number the best photos in nine themed categories have been selected for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd awards. There were also “special mention” awards, some categories were split into singles and series prizes. These are 54 photographers who may count on a very good publicity. The photo of the year was taken by Paul Hansen, who pictured a Palestinian family carrying bodies of their dead children, killed by Israeli missiles, for the burial ceremony.

The prize winning photographs are assembled into an exhibition that travels all over the world. Additionally, the WPP publishes a high-quality yearbook with the best photographs; I’ve got the 2008 and 2009 editions.

As we all know, the “bad news” sells much better than the “good news” and so the photos show the most tragic events of the past year. Please don’t get me wrong, I find the images amazing and definitely worth seeing… as long as you can stand to see a great deal of suffering.

I always go to the WPP exhibitions, because it amazes me each time how those incredible photojournalists remain calm and focused under such difficult circumstances. Even though I feel exhausted and completely drained of energy afterwards.
